We saw the recommendations and my wife insisted on going through the 35 minute wait to get a table. Once sat, our waiter didn't show for another 10 minutes! We ordered the drinks and appetizers - my wife's mixed drink was overpowering in its strength. It was clear that they didn't know how to make a Margarita. I ordered a Sam Adams on tap - it was flat. The appetizers were small and not very good. I had the escargots and they were almost cold and not properly cooked. We complained but they didn't seem to care. Once we got our main meals they were ALL cold. We complained again and were told that it would be another 30 minutes until they came out again - they were sorry because there was a party of 10 people that they were tending to...obviously, a table of 3 didn't matter to them. We got the check for almost $200 and got out of there NEVER to return. This place is for wannabe's who think that they know fine dining. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up. You were warned.

Been there a few times and it had always been decent. However, when I went this past summer for breakfast, and the service was very slow and my food was cold by the time it got to the table. The waitress screwed up a few of our orders, and it took forever to get our food. I would recommend Fairway over Van Rensselaers.

Not good for kids !? Our 2 year old LOVES Van Rensselaer's! It's the one restaurant we bring her to where we know she'll eat and where we'll all enjoy the experience. It starts with the salad bar - enabling us to get her healthy food within minutes of being seated. The salad bar has an outstanding and tasty selection, and was constantly refreshed every time we've been there. We've eaten at Van Rensselaer's over 70 times in the past 7 years, and found it to be a consistently high quality, pleasant, fulfilling dining experience. It is our "go to" restaurant when we're on the Cape. The only reason I'm not granting 5 stars is because my wife thinks the scallops are not the best to be found on the upper cape. They're very good, but frankly other restaurants nearby do better. I, on the other hand, have never had a better Tenderloin au poivre - including at restaurants like Grille 23 in Boston - Van Rensselaer's beef dishes are among the best I've had anywhere. VR's get our enthusiastic recommendation for consistently high quality food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. They don't do lunch, only breakfast & dinner. Try to make reservations if you plan on going at 7pm on a Saturday in August - they do fill up then.
