Certainly one of the best inns on the Cape
by thorgan at Citysearch
We've stayed at many places on the Cape over the years, and this past weekend returned to an old favorite, the Captains House Inn. It was simply the best place we've stayed at in Chatham, and maybe one of the best anywhere on the Cape. It is hard to imagine how it could be improved on.
The innkeepers pay attention to every possible detail - all the rooms have fireplaces, most have DVDs, the sheets on our bed were very high quality, silky cotton sheets, there were special baked treats left out at night, complementary bottles of water, chips and snack bars, high-end shampoo/conditioner and body lotions, and all of the rooms are very nicely decorated and homey, with decor ranging from dark, intimate rooms to bright, pastel colored ones. The main house has a dining area for breakfast, and a reading room. There is an interesting garden in the back, and a small workout room (and pool for when the better weather arrives). The staff is very nice, ready to do whatever you need to make your stay more comfortable. All very nice.
It was a rainy, raw weekend, so we spent most of our time in the room, either reading by the fireplace or watching movies. Our room had a king-sized bed and a small couch, and a separate area with a fireplace and two comfortable chairs. The room had a cathederal ceiling and a small balcony. There are many rooms to choose from, each with their own personality and level of comfort.
The breakfasts are culinary delights with fresh fruit, breads and juices. While you eat the staff cleans your room, which is a great touch. We'd overslept one morning and they called and offered to bring breakfast to the room for us - a great treat. And then they left us alone (no calls of "housekeeping" to bother us) until we let them know we were leaving for a walk and dinner.
Captains may cost a bit more than most places in town but total experience makes it well worth it for that special stay. Very highly recommended. We'll be back!
- Pros: Attention to details and your comfort, friendly staff, a real "homey" feel
- Cons: Costs more (but you get what you pay for)
Heaven on Earth

If you want to be pampered in a quiet and beautiful setting, you will enjoy this magnificent setting in Chatham. By far our favorite place to go and meet new people.
A relaxing and enjoyable time, every time we visit. The service is top notch and the staff is charming and warm.
Heaven on Earth!
- Pros: Service and Ambience are the best anywhere
- Cons: We can't afford to go as often as we would love to go.
We love this place!

We truly enjoyed our recent stay at the Captain's House. It was a Chamber of Commerce weekend for the Cape over Memorial Day this year - the Captain's House was surrounded by lilac bushes and spring flowers - the birds were going crazy in all of the trees surrounding the main house. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms and had a few issues with cooling the room after a long sunny day, but the bathroom was great - huge two person shower and there was lots of nice amenities. Breakfast each morning was a treat to behold and make sure you don't miss the afternoon cream tea - it was really great. A little 'girlie' for my husband, but wonderful after a busy day of shopping and hitting our favorite spots on the Cape!
The staff were very attentive without hovering...it was delightful to have the entire run of the main house to include the kitchen, library (with a laptop for guest use) and pool and gym. The pool is beautifully secluded in a fenced in area behind the property and was so private, it felt like we were on an island!
The Inn itself is situated in Chatham - a great location very close to the Chatham Lighthouse and the town of Chatham with all of its great restaurants and shops. We will definitely be back!
James and Jill, the innkeepers/owners are wonderful and have done a great job of making your stay both calm and relaxing....thanks to them for making our brief getaway so wonderful!
- Pros: Loved the breakfast and the tea - the location is very quiet and secluded.
- Cons: Price is a bit much for the tiny room we had
A combination of regal Cape Cod history and charm.

The Scene
This stunning compound features three unique properties--a mansion in the Greek Revival style, a Carriage House and Stables, and the Captain's Cottage with a bow roof. The original house is steeped in Cape Cod history, beginning with its builder, sea captain Hiram Harding, a bit of a Chatham legend.
The Details
Each of the guest rooms is uniquely decorated with accents and amenities that may include exposed beam ceilings, four-poster beds, brick fireplaces and whirlpools. A fruit and juice basket awaits your arrival, and an exquisite breakfast and high English tea are served. The herb garden is surrounded by a charming white picket fence and features bubbling fountains and an abundance of color in the warmer months. Fireplaces for the winter and open porches for the summer welcome visitors year-round.
